We all know that human heart has got 4 valves. These valves have a one-way mechanism allowing blood to flow from one chamber of the heart to another, but not backwards.
They can become either leaky (regurgitation) or narrow(stenosis) due to various underlying reasons such as degeneration with ageing, inflammatory process, certain infections etc.
In patients who have severe leak in mitral valve, they can have breathlessness, palpitations, easy fatigability, impairment of heart pumping capacity, and several other complications.
Conventional open-heart surgical repair or valve replacement used to be the only option of treatment until recently. But with the advent of newer technology, for Mitral valve regurgitation (leakage) where the mitral valve leaflets don’t close tightly, Transcatheter therapy is available using a device called MITRACLIP which is a safe and feasible alternative to surgical treatment.
The MitraClip device is a small clip about the size of a small rupee coin , that’s attached to your mitral valve to stop the backward leaking of blood. It treats mitral regurgitation by letting your mitral valve close more completely, helping to re – establish normal blood flow.
